The Fall of Eve

The Fall of Eve looks at the portrayal of black women during the first part of the twentieth century.

Some say Eve was the first (black) female and mother of mankind, therefore her degeneration into domestic slavery is of up most importance. Hence, The Fall of Eve looks at the portrayal of black women during the first part of the twentieth century. It concentrates on the performances of actresses in subjugated roles e.g. the house maid in Gone with the Wind (1932), by dividing the piece into three acts. The simplicity of the black/white imagery then enhances the clichéd activities that take place. In this way, the timeless power of the gospel/blues music succeeds, in reducing Eve from a mythical goddess to a domestic slave.
