Thinking Twice

Thinking Twice features the pianist Katharina Wolpe playing music composed by her father Stefan Wolpe.

Thinking Twice features the pianist Katharina Wolpe playing music composed by her father Stefan Wolpe. She plays Piece of Embittered Music from the Zemach Suite (1939), Studies, Part 1 (1944-51) and Form for Piano (1951), which he dedicates to his daughter. When I first heard this music I thought it sounded so filmic.

Stefan Wolpe was born in Berlin in 1902 and died in New York in 1972. The title is taken from a series of lectures he gave at the Darmstadt Festival of Contemporary Music in 1959. The film attempts to reflect the rigour of the music.

Pianist: Katharina Wolpe
