The Materiality Of Video

The Materiality of Video
This tour is a technical primer for working with video on computer.

My knowledge comes from working with Final Cut on a Mac but the issues are the same for any computer editing. I will concentrate on PAL video format as that is what we use in the UK and in most of Europe.

To work with video it is first important to understand what it is and how the images are generated. The image on the right is lifted direct from video, and saved to the computer. Notice how the balls are not round, the right ball looks like it is two places at once. This tour explains why it looks wrong and how to correct it.

A video still, unprocessed.
