'Still photography and film have always existed as a kind of window frame through which images are observed... A new kind of reality is created causing perceptual assumptions to be made that are as established as those used to perceive the real world. It is the manipulation of these perceptual notions that forms the basis of Vertical.

In part, the film extends the ideas of my earlier sculpture but it exists as a statement in its own right. Something is created that could not be encountered within the conventions of object making. This film is not a documentary, although the material is of documented events, situations and structures. Participation exists conceptually, somewhere between the surface of the screen and the events themselves.' DH, 1969.
